Flora is our beautiful three year old granddaughter who was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma cancer in April 2021. Doctors found a large tumour next to one of her kidneys, cancer in her skull and behind her eyes and in her bone marrow. To say that Flora has been dealt a difficult start in life, is an understatement. Despite the challenges she faces, and the trauma she has been through over the past 9 months, she is the happiest and most affectionate little girl! There are days you would have no idea she’s even battling a life threatening illness. But there are also days where Flora is incredibly ill and as a family, it is frightening and heartbreaking to witness. She has already undergone 8 rounds of chemo, a 7 hour surgery to remove her tumour, 5 weeks of high dose chemo and a stem cell transplant in isolation, and radiotherapy. This is along with the countless scans and tests, general anaesthetics, and blood transfusions that go hand in hand with receiving cancer treatment. She has now just started 6 months of immunotherapy, and this is where her NHS treatment will end. Neuroblastoma has a wicked way of working and despite the gruelling treatment, 50% of children with Neuroblastoma will relapse. This is why we are walking 215 km over 10 days dressed as Granny and Grandpa Pig. Our hope is that businesses and members of our community will get behind us and donate to our fund so that Flora can get to New York to enrol on the clinical trial.
