Can I get access to counselling?
Yes. Counselling is available for parents, carers, siblings and young people affected by neuroblastoma. The right support for you will depend on your needs, and there are several ways to access counselling through your child’s clinical team, your GP, local services, charities, and specialist cancer organisations. Solving Kids’ Cancer UK also offers emotional support services that can sit alongside counselling, which are outlined further down this page.
Counselling through your child’s treatment team
Your child’s treating team can refer you to psychological support within the hospital. This may include:
- clinical psychologists
- psychotherapists
- family therapists
- wellbeing practitioners
These services are familiar with the emotional impact of caring for a child with cancer and can offer support during treatment, relapse, or long-term follow up.
If you or your child are struggling emotionally, ask your consultant or clinical nurse specialist about what support is available.
Counselling through your GP
Your GP can refer you to local NHS mental health services, including:
- NHS Talking Therapies (previously IAPT services) such as CBT, counselling, or trauma‑focused therapy
- support for anxiety, depression or bereavement
- specialist services for young people
In many areas, you can also self‑refer directly to NHS Talking Therapies without seeing your GP. This can sometimes be the quickest route to support.
Waiting times vary by area, but your GP can advise on the quickest and most appropriate route.
Local and online counselling services
You can also find counselling independently through local or online providers. Websites such as Hub of Hope offer directories of support and mental health resources in your area.
Other reputable places to find qualified therapists include:
These organisations can help you find counsellors with experience in cancer, trauma, bereavement or family support.
You may also find low‑cost options through organisations such as Power to Live Foundation, a UK‑based charity offering affordable, means‑tested behavioural therapy online.
