What follow-up care will my child need after treatment? 

After treatment ends, your child will continue to have regular appointments with their oncology team, and sometimes with other hospital departments. Follow‑up care helps check for any signs that the cancer has returned, monitors recovery, and identifies any longer‑term effects of treatment. 

Hospital follow up 

Follow up usually includes regular hospital appointments, which may involve: 

• physical examinations 

• blood or urine tests 

• scans, if needed 

Appointments are more frequent at first and gradually become less often if your child remains well. 

Monitoring recovery and late effects 

Some treatments can cause side effects that appear months or years later. Follow-up care allows doctors to monitor your child’s growth, development, hearing, learning, and overall wellbeing, and to arrange additional support if needed. 

If you notice changes 

You know your child best. If you have concerns between appointments, such as new symptoms, changes in energy or behaviour, or worries about development, you can contact your child’s treatment team at any time. 

Life after treatment 

Follow up is also a time to support your family as you adjust to life after treatment. Many families find this period emotionally challenging, even when treatment has gone well.
