What does it mean if my child has MYCN amplification?
MYCN is a gene that helps control how cells grow and divide. If a neuroblastoma is described as “MYCN amplified”, it means the cancer cells have extra copies of this gene.
When MYCN amplification is present, the cancer can grow faster, spread more easily, and may be harder to treat. This is considered an important risk factor, and tumours with this feature are usually classified as “high-risk”.
Doctors use tests on tumour samples to check for MYCN amplification. This information helps guide decisions about the best treatment plan for your child.
What does this mean for treatment?
- Children with MYCN amplified neuroblastoma often need more intensive treatment, which may include higher doses of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and sometimes newer treatments or clinical trials.
- Although MYCN amplification can make the cancer more aggressive, fast-growing tumours can sometimes respond better to chemotherapy.
