What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a research study that involves people. Clinical trials help doctors find out if a new treatment is safe and works well. For children with neuroblastoma, clinical trials may offer access to treatments that are not yet part of standard care.
Clinical trials are especially important when standard treatments are not working, or when doctors are looking for better ways to treat the disease.
Phases of clinical trials
Clinical trials are split into four phases which represent how far along in the research process a certain drug or treatment approach is, and what researchers are trying to find out.
- Phase I: Tests a new treatment in a small group of people to check it is safe and to find out about any side effects.
- Phase II: Involves more people with the illness. This phase looks at the best dose and whether the treatment works against the disease (for neuroblastoma, this means seeing how the tumour responds).
- Phase III: Compares the new treatment with the current standard treatment or a placebo in a larger group. This phase checks how well the new treatment works and monitors side effects. If successful, the treatment may be approved for wider use.
- Phase IV: After approval, the treatment is monitored in everyday use to check for long-term safety and effectiveness. Not all treatments have a Phase IV trial.
Taking part in a clinical trial is voluntary. Your child’s medical team will explain the possible benefits and risks, and you can ask questions at any time.
