In loving memory of Maya Zubel

Maya was a bubbly and bright little girl who sadly passed at the age of six.

Her parents, Agnieszka and Rafal, wrote:

“Our beloved daughter Maya gained her Angel wings at 1:45 this morning. We are heartbroken and lost but we know that she is happy forever and free of pain and doesn’t suffer any more. Always in ours and your hearts.”

Maya’s story

Maya had just turned three when her parents noticed her appetite had reduced and she had become very lethargic and pale. After visits to the GP and two rounds of antibiotics, Maya seemed to be getting worse by the day. The family demanded further investigations and blood tests came back abnormal. An ultrasound and x-ray revealed a tumour in Maya’s adrenal gland and she was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

She was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma and it had spread. Maya had chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endless scans and daily injections. Sadly just as Maya began to improve, another tumour was found behind her eye. She had relapsed and once that happens a child’s future is very uncertain.

The family began fundraising for future treatment  – supported by Solving Kids’ Cancer. At the time it wasn’t known what the best option for Maya would be. If that treatment were overseas, it could have cost hundreds of thousands.

Sadly Maya passed away. The funds raised by the family will now go to helping Solving Kids’ Cancer to support other children and families battling this devastating disease. Agnieszka and Rafal are keeping Maya’s page open so you can donate in her memory and they say:

“Maya fought this with everything she had and coped brilliantly, she always had a smile, we miss her and will love her forever.”
