Support us during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

In the UK, a child affected by neuroblastoma dies every 2 weeks. We are fighting for a future where no child dies from neuroblastoma or suffers due to its treatment.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we’d love for you to get involved and support us throughout the month to give hope to children and families affected by neuroblastoma.

Ellen's Story

Ellen was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma at just two years old in 2018. Within days of being diagnosed, Ellen started intense and aggressive frontline treatment.

Ellen's family were supported by our Family Support Service to access a clinical trial in New York not available on the NHS in the hope of reducing the chances of her neuroblastoma returning. Despite involving the most intense treatment regime of all cancers, neuroblastoma returns in 40-50% of all children diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma.   When a child does relapse, the survival rate is less than 10% and this figure worsens every time the cancer comes back.

Ellen completed the clinical trial in June 2020 and she remains free of disease.

“Ellen is doing well now, thankfully, though we are now starting to deal with the long-term side effects that have been caused by the harsh treatment she went through. Even after all that she has been through, Ellen is such a happy little character. I feel such an overwhelming sense of gratitude that she is doing as well as she is and enjoying her life again. I am also acutely aware that some families have not been so fortunate,” says mum, Claire.

What is neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is a rare and aggressive childhood cancer that affects around 100 children each year in the UK. Most children are under 5 years old when they are diagnosed. Half of all neuroblastoma cases are classified as ‘high-risk’, where the cancer has spread by the time it is diagnosed, and immediate treatment is required. Children diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma have about a 40-50% chance of long-term survival.
